Nairn Academy hosts inaugural Sports Fair – Monday 24th September

This event was organised by Donald Hall, Community Sports Hub Officer, Andrea MacKenzie, Active School Coordinator and Nairn Academy PE Dept where S1 and S2 pupils got the opportunity to learn about and experience a variety of different sports available in the local community.  The majority of the pupils were engaged and made the best use of the short time to move around nine activities and four information stalls.  There were a range of activities on offer, including Badminton, Boccia, Dance, Gymnastics, Orienteering and many more.  There was a mental health stall and CPR training sessions provided by High Life Highland libraries and facilities staff.  Nairn Sailing club displayed a fully rigged sailing dinghy in the Games Hall.  Ewan MacDonald, local Olympian and multiple World Curling champion attended the event and encouraged pupils to try Indoor Curling with support from Nairn Curling Club.   Pupils also took part in a sports quiz and the winners Struan Fuller S1 and Peter Fonseca S2 received vouchers and a tee-shirt donated by Nairn Sailing Club.  At the end of the event, club coaches and staff got together to discuss future links and try some tasty homemade cake.

Our thanks to: Nairn Community Sport Hub, Scottish Orienteering, Inverness Orienteering Club, High Life Highland Libraries, Badminton Scotland, Nairn Sports Club, Nairn Leisure Centre, High Life Highland Leadership Programme, Nairn Synchronised Swimming Club, Nairn Rugby Club, Nairn Curling Club, Highland Curling Development Group, Nairn Sailing Club and various school clubs.

Expressive Arts at Nairn Academy – BBC Ten Pieces

Pupils in S1 and senior Music pupils enjoyed a free concert yesterday given by Highland based orchestral ensemble ‘The Mahler Players’ http://www.mahlerplayers.co.uk/ . The Art & Design/Music faculty is currently running an inter-disciplinary project with all S1 pupils where they analyse pieces of music in their Music class then work on creative responses to these pieces of music in Art & Design. This project is based on the BBC Ten Pieces, an initiative in its third year, which opens up the world of classical music to young people, introducing them to inspiring music and empowering them to make their own creative responses. Pupils can follow this up at home by accessing fantastic short films on https://www.bbc.com/teach/ten-pieces/KS2-3/zmc38xs
